Shinobi Girl 1st season 2012

“my dream was to work on wall street. Then it became a nightmare. The rich preyed upon the poor. And corruption was everywhere. I stood up against the oppression. And became a fugitive on the run. Then I decided to fight back. Some call me a vigilatne. But you can call me SHINOBI GIRL! I fight for justice, I fight for you….”

This does reveal spoilers so read on if that doesn’t bother you.

Saw this on my subscription to Midnight Pulp. Its a paid service for entertainment (movies and tv etc.) on amazon prime.

I saw what looked like a movie, but its an actual television series from Media Blasters. I don’t know why but this company looks familiar. If this is their production, I can only imagine what else they got brewing up in their lab.

If you have seen Tommy Wiseau in the film, the Room you can almost already get an idea for the acting and dialogue in this television series. OK this might be a little too harsh, but honestly when it comes to the dialogue and the actual conversing parts, this is where this gets pretty comical and definitely falls into the B-movie pedigree most notorious from the 80s.

The action is sometimes deliberately slow, dramatic and the sound effects are almost as distracting as the hilarious subtitles in the old Adam West batman. Its nothing that you aren’t already going to expect, so just try and enjoy and not take it too seriously.

Where this show shines is indeed in Shinobi Girl! and she is an otherwise ordinary business woman or some shit. Not unlike this real world we live in, this alternate universe shown here, is all up in corruption. She wanted to become a Wall Street employee. But instead became a vigilante bent on justice and trying to combat the corruption. She invested in the alter ego, “shinobi girl” and she is essentially like a female ninja, its got that martial arts kind of aesthetic. She can do a pretty badass somersault with a sword, so no I wouldn’t be too eager to challenge her to any hand to hand combat.

In terms of the episodes its spanning over 9 episodes. And actually after looking around, I did actually find a 2015 full length film based off of this. Each episode develops not only the character of Shinobi Girl but it also develops and shows the undermining authority’s that are ravaging the city and motive to erase Shinobi Girl.

There is a developing love interest between Shinobi Girl and the detective James D’Amato.

We see in the 4th episode a memory of her with what looks like her sensai and they are outdoors training. You get the stereotypical gong sound and oriental thematic. This entire episode is a lot of montages and retrospectives. And training.

Its gets only more painfully bad towards the end, but its actually enjoyable. For what it is. I did get a month of this streaming service, and its notorious for cheese and schlock. So I’ll probably be watching more nonsense and will share it here.
