The band Suffocation needs no introduction, I think them alongside Cannibal Corpse might possibly be some of the top or big name death metal bands since the beginning.
This album moves and sounds almost mechanical or industrial but not the “industrial” you may be thinking, I only say that in comparison to a machine and machinery. Considering they left behind Mike Smith on the skins, and brought in Dave Culross, he surprisingly does a remarkable job and really carry’s along the sound with each blast and bang on the drums.
The center stage of the album is of course Frank of course! his vocals are just downright otherworldly, he really could quite possibly be my favorite death metal vocalist. He manages to sound brutal as all hell, all the while annunciating and pronouncing words so its not just a COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE REEEEEE sounding nonsense.
This album is an EP and it does manage to rip your face off and have you wanting more. But quite honestly I cannot think of a greater selection of tracks. This IS and WAS my contender of the best and quintessential Suffocation.
The lyrics do have a lot of anti-God and violent themes. They have always been a band that has been very anti-religion/christian and seem to be in favor of nihilism and anti-life. While its not necessarily encouraging it is a welcoming relief from all the gore and arbitrary death and zombies nonsense. Oh, dont get me wrong! that is still here in situations, but its much more minimal in favor of more reality twinged lyrical content.
All in all this album doesn’t disappoint one single bit, and wow what a giant feasting mass of terror considering the hard to reckon with PIERCED FROM WITHIN.
