Lets be clear, I was well aware of this grand opus much before this writing. And I have to be frank, I didn’t particularly care for this at the time of hearing it. The operatic singing and the experimentation, just didn’t work right with me. It was more distracting, and a nuisance than anything positive. I thought much of the same, with the band Believer. I cannot for the life of me, understand when bands in a metal genre want to conflict it with including odd and completely off base genre mixing.
I know variety, and being original are all tangible goals and I would assume everyone, wants to be the new chip off the old block. But in the case of music, and composition, when you go around including themes and mixes of different vocal styles and orchestrations, that do more business to overwhelm, then to actually deliver the cohesive flow of the album.
This was always my gripe and only grief with this album, I would otherwise have loved it. Well fast forward to modern day, and I am now much more a matured person, off into my 40s, hardly a fresh hen, but far from a wise old rooster. Now sitting here, and listening to some of the violins and the operatic moments, with the thematic cries of a baby, I can now actually see and hear the intention and it does not take anything away, but it does give weight and detail into the lyrics of the song itself.
See this album is just as much about the music as it is about the lyrics, and these lyrics are some of the most well penned lines of words Ive read from a metal album.
The embryo implants the uterine lining,
folding within its amniotic abode
The gut and neural tubes forming in conjunction
Cardiac impulse with foetal brain function
This is not fanciful wordplay or gangster rap, its death metal! and the lyrics and delivery often remind me of Broken Hope. Accept in the case of this band, the words are penned to detail the relationship of humankind with God. And most importantly, to detail the very reality and life of Jesus Christ.
See the world here today, this very man of Christ, is nothing more but story. They get their daily doses of porn, inebriants and or real physical pleasure. The human beast does carry on without regard for Christ, just as it always did. Its clear to me, that the human wants to fulfill the lusts and exhaust every capacity to numb the pain of any shame from the doing of sin.
I am running off topic here. This album here, is death metal, and doom specific. Very much death/doom. You are not going to hear very complex or intricate solos. But you will be enjoying the thunderous rhythm and flow of the guitars as they buzz through the slow and foreboding nature and environment of this record.
I am very impressed with this release, this is definitely some of, if not the best death/doom Ive heard. And I honestly have rare few to compare. To me some of its variety, I do get from bands like Autopsy.
