Arcturus, Dimmy Burgers… more importantly ICS Vortex

Dont think I was ever exempt from commercial metal, and especially the most profound poser bombardment that is Dimmu Borgir or even Cradle of Filth for that matter.

I remember smoking marijuana, drinking with two of my elementary school friends. Of course we were all in high school now, at this point. Those two took it upon themselves to include in our community 3-4 others, these intruders all seemed to be younger in age. If there was a face to burnouts they epitomized that.

Of course I was the driver, and we hung out in an apartment complex. One of the females, who seemed underage. Sure enough she was. And of all intrusions, we had a police officer approach the vehicle. He wasn’t much concerned about any of us, but he did sight out the girl, and sure enough she was something around the age of 16. He escorted her home, or so the story goes.

Me being certain the police were going to notice the marijuana and I would be sent to jail, and not able to collect $200 or pass go. Oddly enough he just got the girl, and let us go. It was late at night, I think he just didn’t want any minors getting into mischief. That was fine with me, I didn’t like her company anyway.

Anyway this story or scenario does have a point, and it had to do with the fact that the other occupants were not rap listeners, no they were all into Cradle of Filth. And this was the first I was made aware of them, and Dimmy or that matter. This was my introduction to commercial “black” metal.

While Dimmy does satiate the pallet much better than CoF, the two are hardly tolerable for long. But one thing about Dimmy is that they introduced me to an incredible musician. One that went by the name ICS Vortex.

This is what got me into Arcturus and Borknager. Moreso Arcturus. His clean vocals are some of the best! and if there was a blueprint to METAL clean vocals, it should show ICS Vortex. Don’t get me wrong there are other exceptions, most notably I think of Extol especially the Undeceived album. Ironically enough all of Norwegian nationality.

Well if you made it this far you owe it to yourself to listen to some older Dimmy albums and especially Arcturus!
