[MUSIC REVIEW] Cemetary – An Evil Shade of Grey

Artist: Cemetary
Album: An Evil Shade Of Grey
Year: 1992
Wiki: yes

One thing that is fun for me is searching around for old school death metal bands that appeal to me. Surprisingly, more times than not I find a lot of boring bands. Maybe I am not as true to the genre as I thought I was, but I think all of the standout bands are a standout for a reason, they have a unquestionable ability to appeal to the genre. Well as it turns out I actually discovered an old school band today that actually piqued my interest, and I thought I would give it a go, and try to delve into their sound, and offer a seminal review in the process. Sound good? no, well fuck it I am going to drivel on anyway.

The band I speak of is Cemetery, and the album is “An Evil Shade of Grey”, debuting in the year 1992. It’s rather atmospheric in sound and delivery, it does remain in the ranks of death metal with the down tuned guitars and the guttural vocals. There are some synth sounding arrangements, and they do dive into some softer classical guitar sounding bits. But the crushing patterns interwove between somber and elegant arrangements. It’s a interchangeable sound that I oftenest enjoy, especially in death metal. I have heard this band described as more heavy metal than even death metal. But it to me remains true to death metal, but as said before they do have the ability to change their style from brutality into softer parts.

I cannot believe this band fell through my radar, because they do have a unique sound and are prominently one of few bands from the earlier time period that stands out. Nothing too overly destructive as far as the genre is concerned, this remains an enjoyable piece of music that rely’s heavily on atmosphere, and borrows lightly on the harsh nature of metal music. I cannot say this band is something that I would listen to on a repeatedly basis, but I do consider them something unique, and definitely beautiful. Definitely something to check out considering the time period.

After reading their wiki it turns out this band considers themselves, (swedish) Gothic Metal, maybe something along the lines of Tiamat? I haven’t listened to any of their other albums, to make any kind of judgment. But on this album alone, it is pretty damn good and worth picking up.

[MOVIE REVIEW] Combat Shock 1984

One thing I have never really cared for is a Troma film, it’s not that I don’t appreciate what they do, but I think at times their minuscule budget and lack of talent, really leaves me with a disinterested response. Like I said before, it’s not that I don’t like what they are doing, I just personally cannot typically get into a lot of their films, it’s just below b-movie for me, and more like public access, or camcorder delivered. With all that being said I was a great deal swayed in wanting to watch Combat Shock, once I saw it was distributed by Troma Films. But after conversing with a group of bmovie, sleaze and gore fans, on facebook, the deliberated with me and guaranteed a good time if I watch it, so I did just that.

The film begins in Vietnam, and is narrated by our lead character Frankie. From this we learn he was a captive of war, and obviously a veteran of war. We soon fast forward to his present life, and begin to see another grim and depressing scene, something that very well parallels with the horror of war. An apartment that looks uninhabitable, a nagging wife, a crying deformed alien baby… and a steaming pot that just whistles and adds to the agonizing reality of a life, without money, food or really any hope to carry on.

This assembles him to face the streets and begin his search for a.) food, b.) money/job. We also are introduced to a small gang syndicate on the streets, that we find out Frankie owes money to, he is pardoned for a day to pay them back. We also find his friend who is a severally wasted heroin junkie. A lot of the characters we meet on the street are poorly acted and portrayed, very unconvincing and almost comical in appearance. It’s all forgiven because Rick Giovinazzo does a commendable job, as a desperate man who is down and out and just on the brink of crumbling from the realities of urban life.

So yes, basically the whole movie is summarized with Frankie wandering the streets and receiving blow after blow, figuratively and physically. It’s absolutely the depressing tale of a man crumbling into insanity. Some of the scenes seemed kind of pointless, but it did help attribute to the dark depressing tone of the movie. Something I found funny was when he was in the employment office and the guy says “life is hot Frankie, and because it is hot, I am compelled to remove my jacket…”. I read in an interview with the director, he said he had the scene of the junkie friend “skin popping”, the heroin… and then it launches to the scene of the employment office with the guy taking the pills… both addicts. There was nothing positive at all in this movie… it was great. Its made me want to check out more movies from the director. And with the baby, I can see the similarities with Eraserhead. He was definitely influenced by lynch on the movie.

[MOVIE REVIEW] Nightmare 1981 – horror

Here we have a slasher gem from the 80’s that runs in the similar vein of Maniac (around the same time period), where we meet a psycho killer who attributed their ill nature from a traumatic childhood, or event. Most namely, in the event of a family member traumatizing the said individual. I find this evident in other movies, but I think Maniac is one of the best examples.

Needless to say we find our psycho killer (as an adolescent) at the beginning of the movie starring at his father, and a women (maybe a prostitute?), who appear to be engaged in some BDSM fun. For whatever reason, George (our killer) doesn’t particularly enjoy seeing his dad being slapped by this women and he proceeds to hack them up with an axe, (the end will reveal more about this scene) and that begins our movie… off to a good start if you ask me.

George is hospitalized for several mental illness in the vein of schizophrenia, and the list enumerates on and on.  His illness appears to be controlled with medication, and they prepare him for
a release on the basis that he be relatively monitored and remain in a “half way house”. Of course George does what comes naturally, and he proceeds to a xxx theater, and he continues to see flashbacks of the time he murdered his father and lover, this will often time give him seizures, where he convulses and foams at the mouth, ya know? a seizure.

After this we find him escaped from the regulatory maintained requirements of his release from the hospital, and he murders a women and then proceeds to find the house of where his crime was committed in time past. This also proceeds to show the hospital, getting frustrated and demand that they find George before he murders more and all hell brakes loose. I think its funny that the man always smoking a cigar, sounds distinctly like a women. I mean he is obviously a man, you can see by his physical features, particularly the dead ringer of a mustache. Anyway this has nothing to do with, well really anything, but I just found it comical, him sounding a lot like a female.

Later on in the movie we are introduced to a family, with a particular trouble maker named CJ, between him and George it really makes up, and surmises the rest of the story. A lot of people will think CJ is a pain in the ass, but if you really think about it, he is just an adolescent out to have some fun and cause mischief. Albeit, some really fucked up practical jokes, but nonetheless he maintains a very independent and strong features about himself, and later you find him truly become the protagonist, or anti-hero if you will, but all the same a credible, and in the end a almost likable character.

I don’t want to dig too much more into the story, without revealing too much and spoiling it for those who have not seen it yet. But all in all, I think this is definitely a credible slasher in the horror genre, namely because of CJ and the quintessential creepiness of George. Not much gore in this movie, and because of CJ it almost takes away from the horror elements and lands it into a almost comedic story. But one thing is for certain it does offer some good gore, especially for the time period. Halloween is right around the corner, and this is good flick to pick up and check out.

Pissgrave – Suicide Euphoria

Artist: Pissgrave
Album: Suicide Euphoria
Label: Profound Lore Records
Year: 2015
Wiki: N/A

One thing Dead Congregation taught me, is that not only is their music brilliant but the label Profound Lore has an equally respectable reputation. I used to throw around this accolade in the past without much validation, but I can say with certainty that Profound Lore has integrity that is lacking in extreme music market lately. So it is without much surprise that I found the band Pissgrave so appealing.

And no I refuse to use the endless adjectives associated with death, vomit and gore, that I have found plastered about the group. Death metal has always had a reputation with death and gore, the lyrics, the artwork it all has been synonymous with the aforementioned. Nothing garners more teen angst than the offensive, and nothing is more repulsive than a prepubescent rebellion. With commonality of the internet, desensitization of humanity has become easier than gimmicky, “creepy” death metal album artwork, and song titles describing forensics and “gross”, things. In contrast I would rather see this kind of artwork on albums like Kanye West, Katy Perry and Nikki Minaj albums, helping the world to see what a deliberate contradiction they are to the existence of humanity.

Pissgrave though formulaic and a bit predictable, the album doesn’t make me bored or disinterested. They manage to offer a variation in sound throughout the album, it has dissonance, but an equally contributing sense of harmony. If an album at 30 minutes, leaves me wanting more they have definitely accomplished their task of finding a new fan. The vocals are unique as far as standard gutturals are concerned, sounds impossible to be human. It has moments of dark breaks, and just emanates that eerie atmosphere only death metal can accomplish. Not overly polished, which is what I find intolerable about the current flock of death metal giants.

I get an early Carcass vibe, it pays respect to the old school… all the while managing to keep it new and refreshing. Definitely worth your well earned pennies.

I do retract my statement about the repulsive a bit, I think that this genre of music requires a resemblance of the obscene, to really portray the ugliness of what death metal can accomplish.

existence

This summarizes my beliefs, or lack thereof. I do to an extent feel a nagging on my spirit to exist, by something outside myself. But I will not subscribe to a human institution that brings about only contradiction and hypocrisy. I love the line, “if the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation for divine reward…”. This first season has some really excellent writing in it, a good deal of t&a but only to expose the aforementioned hypocritical views of the “believer”.

Irrelevancy will ensue beyond this point –> Its amazing how much restraint and discipline I have experienced from a lifestyle abstinent from sexual impulse and desire but also the ability to think for self, and avoid external influence (albeit the things which have a ring of truth to myself). I want to become something better than what I have been, which hasn’t been much at all.

Discipline of desires, not feeding the beast that gets hungry for the wrong things. Denying self the pleasures that only distract it from purpose, consequential circumstance will always remind it of purpose. It’s ignorance to continue down a path without realizing the consequence, I have to live with the conviction of my consequences. Betterment with a purposeful intent.

I am alive today not because nature interfered, but because the plug wasn’t pulled by a human being. I put myself in the position to be resuscitated, it was not divine interference, I think we all know in our minds what will be the outcome of our actions. If experience has taught me one thing, it is that, outside of myself no thing will clear a path for myself, the process can only be accomplished by my own efforts and ability. I think when a person hurts themselves and then considers their own survival because god pardoned them from death is selfish and hypocritical. How selfish of a person to believe the universe owes them something, myself included.

This ended up less coherent that I would have liked, but I felt the need to vent.

Gorguts – Colored Sands

Artist: Gorguts
Album: Colored Sands
Label: Season of Mist
Year: 2013
Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorguts

Gorguts never being the most accessible of the death metal variety, experimental and rather unconventional in their approach. But in a genre bent on the moribund, bands like Gorguts offer the vigor and vitality much needed to proceed death metal into the current generation. It seemed as if Gorguts conveniently fell into obscurity, after From Wisdom to Hate; leaving behind a solid collection of music, most notably (in my opinion) Obscura. They alongside Death, Atheist, Pestilence and Cynic became purveyors of the technical and experimental side of death metal. All this being said, only to anticipate the excitement I felt when word was out about a new album in the works. It seemed this and some of the aforementioned bands felt a need to satiate hungry death metal fans, which they accomplished to do.

Colored Sands thematically explores many spiritual and philosophical topics which entwines fascination and interest, while the music carries along a chaotic and oblique contrast. Speaking of which this album seems to be almost more melodic in its approach than other releases, maybe even more accessible in its ability to attain a listeners interest. Subtle strings resonate in quiet retrospect while a sudden impact of double bass and guitars explode. The production is regarded well, in regard to sound levels of each instrument, the bass doesn’t necessarily steal the show, but does remain a focal point of their iconic sound. Of course never missing is the agonizing and chaotic vocals of Lemay which, alongside bass are comparatively unanimous.

I don’t know why it took me this long to write a review, considering I picked up the release upon release. I just had another listen to it last night, and forgot how incredibly great it is. If you have not heard Gorguts before, consider checking out Colored Sands. I think this is a good release as an introductory offering of their sound, and if you can get into this I think it will only pique the interest to check out their other releases.

This gets an incredible accolade in rating.

three green bears eating honey and wafers while discussing life’s anomaly

There is a commonality to man, we all have this addressing issue of proving ourselves, whether aggressively or in a passive way (passive-aggressive). Within the current time, we find homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle and as such, man finds nothing more intolerable and offensive to have their masculinity in question than by being called a homosexual. A sensitive heterosexual man will endure a great deal of insult in the aforementioned.

Have a interest in human beings, and they will find a way to belittle and preserve themselves in a hierarchy construct to rank themselves highest above the rest. Those who wish to find acceptance, and be set aside in commonality will endure insult with the only intent to be socially accepted. This is the psychological equivalent of physical combat, with the only proponent to avoid actual physical fighting. The worse feeling a man may have, than to be mentally defeated, having no outlet to retaliate. I would rather receive a physical beating than to have a man feel some kind of superiority over me.

This reintroduced idea of mans behavior relating to animal conduct. A supposed christian idea of the fallen nature, the betrayal of god in the garden. If the theological principles hold any ground, than why do we all behave predictably the same? why do we have such this inclination to preserve delusion?

Man has this desire to contradict purpose

We want nothing more than to be accepted by human beings, we desire and yearn for the affirmation and welcoming agreement.

I only write this so somebody might know that I exist.

I feel like something outside of myself is directing me, that is the only reason why I try to continue and exist. Something powerful outside of me, that is greater than human beings.

The definitive collection of essential death metal albums 90>80

A list that was doomed to extinction has now properly presented itself back at the forefronts. I had to leave it in stagnation for a good amount of time, to reflect on its deathly nature. Here are 10 more albums you should know about!

089. Beyond Creation – “The Aura”, 2011 Wanking is a sport of endurance and vigorous training to achieve a AHEM! load of pleasurable discharge. And what a discharge it is, in reference to Beyond Creation. A band that has made a name for itself for being labeled a band of wankery, guitar wankery that is. I am hardly in the marginal crowed that would call them such, but I needed a good adjective to roll with, so fuck off. You can get the vibe from their neo-classical style riffing and solos, very reminiscent of Necrophagist, but boy when they hit it right, it just jumps leaps and bounds. To me they don’t wank around, because the directive in playing is set in path and destination, they make an effort to have direction, not just aimlessly play around to try and impress. Definitely a memorable album, and a piece of music I consistently usurp more than once in a while.
088. Devourment – “Molesting the Decapitated”, 1999 Here is something different for the pseudo intellectuals. The fact that I was into this band/album at the beginning of their inception is no surprise, because this is chocked full of shock and disgust, that absolutely fed my teen angst. But to actually have longevity and curiously finding itself being played to this day, is something of a rarity for a band of this nature. It’s supposedly in the category of what they call “slam death”, or “slamming death” or “wigger death metal”, or…. fuck it I don’t  care to divulge any longer. The music is played in chugging patterns, with insanely fast drumming and a gurgling vocalist. It has some cool samples from what sounds to be serial killers, which sets the tone rather well for the music. It keeps itself interesting, when it gets to a slow chugging passage and then drives itself back to a speedily recovery. Its just the perfect soundscape for folding your clothes or doing the dishes, maybe even washing the car. Highly recommended and definitely a pivotal piece in the history of extreme music.
087. Exhumed – “Gore Metal”, 1998 I remember this band fondly, it was around the time I was getting my ducks in a row in regards to Carcass and the whole grind-core infused death metal bands. This is definitely in a league with thrash and death metal. The musicianship is solid and it only borrows in the style and lyrical nature of grindcore, no 10 second long tracks here, or undecipherable noise (my mom would debate that). This has some really great anthems and catchy tunes, that are sure to impress your friends at any bbq or social outing. This was the album that invited me into the world of Exhumed, and I found it to be rather comfortable, with their incessant interest in the world of gore and forensics, almost comedic and never to be taken too seriously. The music boasts some cool leads and chug a chug, alongside their ability to perform some vocal ability I have rarely heard on a death metal record.
086. Vehemence – “Helping the World to See”, 2004 Melodic and progressive, all the while remaining in the death metal ranks, sign me up. Usually when I hear the term “melodic” and “death metal”, I assume the band is some kind of symphonic metal band that shares clean singing and a terribly annoying amount of symphonic parts, basically your run of the mill exploitative band trying to commercialize the genre. With Vehemence its a brutal entree, with all the melodic, progressive and death metal parts melded together proportionately.
085. Decapitated – “Winds of Creation”, 2000 Back when I had a subscription to Terrorizer magazine, I remember reading about a band with teenagers playing death metal I was instantly paying attention. Being 15 years younger myself, I was intrigued by the idea of equally aged individuals playing the genre of music I love. Straight forward brutal death metal, played with precision and finesse are qualities that are hard to look past. I thought it was only fitting to include their debut album, which to me profiles the bands discography well. The drumming of Vitek was speedily played along to harmonious guitar riffing, and melodic leads. Vocals are standard fare growling, never letting out of a scream, but just stirring the pot of death metal goodness.
084. Cynic – “Focus”, 1993 Experimental, genre breaking, original and the list goes on. Cynic and Atheist were creating music that melded together both elements of metal and jazz. Not only musically bounding grounds of different kinds of music but implementing lyrical ideas that delve deep into science fiction and eastern religion, which was not common for a death metal band. This opened up a whole new world of possibility for a rather one sided kind of music. I am sure Death’s “Human”, and Pestilence was a pivotal piece in this sound being introduced at the time. No, instead of following the flock and talking of how many ways you can defile and destroy the human body they pursued a more sophisticated approach.  If this was a top 10 list, you can guarantee this album would be one of those 10.
083. Incantation – “Mortal Throne of the Nazarene”, 1994 To the untrained ear, picking out a Incantation album can be a tiresome task, they have done little change in regard to their formula of death metal, in fact they grow more and more into the sound they developed throughout the years. One album to me has become iconic of their sound and truly represents what they are all about, which is playing raw doom laden death metal. They are not afraid to speed things up, and then bring it all to a slow forebode. Arrangements are all around creating and developing a dark atmosphere, making their own devilish interludes and melodies. The Ibex Moon has become something iconic of the band, as an illustrating track of their sound. I think it’s also worth mentioning that they released “Upon the Throne of the Apocalypse”, which has the rough mixes of this album, that in my opinion sounds even better than what is on their studio release. Another fun fact, I was in rehab with the engineer of this album, credited as “Mr. Bill”. Oh and just look at that artwork! absolutely amazing, like most of their album covers.

082. Cryptopsy – “None so Vile”, 1996 From the beginning of the title track, it’s like a spontaneous whiplash reaction. Having first heard Cryptopsy there was little words that I can say to describe it. It’s just all hell and fury, chaotic and speed I never heard before from a death metal band. They really broadened the possibilities and potential for death metal music. Though they did stride from their initial sound, much like Decapitated, their first couple releases really do leave a long lasting appeal and value. Odd time signatures, insanely fast drumming, Bass riffing like straight off of a Primus album an unconventional approach to what you may be expecting from your traditional death metal band. Top notch shit here folks, top notch.

081. Deicide – “Once Upon the Cross”, 1995 I don’t who stole Glen Benton’s lunch money, but one thing is still for sure, the guy is all kinds of pissed off because of it. From his not so humble beginnings to his later releases he still remains as one of the most pissed off and angry vocalists in Death Metal. What makes his vocal approach so refreshing is his ability to enunciate and growl out decipherable lyrics. I mean in all honesty I could care less about his anti-god agenda but it is refreshing to not have to question whether or not what is being growled is even the lyrics you’re reading on the cd-inlay. And yes, like much of the bands on this list it is a insanely difficult task to just pick one album from their discography, because it’s arguably impossible to do. This release to me, illustrates enough from all of their music to really give you a solid kick to the balls, and remind you how insanely ferocious and beastly death metal really is. Whether or not Glen is willing to forgive the christian bully that stole his lunch money, one thing is for sure, it benefits us greatly, because he has put out some of the most addicting and awesome death metal.

080. Autopsy – “Severed Survival”, 1989 The year of this release, Chris Reifert doing both vocals and drumming just scales of credibility this band has at their helm. Being at the early stages of death metal, one has little expectations, but holy shit they perform at a caliber that really places the bar high for the up-comers. Guitars speedily trailing along, while bass slaps the shit out of your ears and the drumming just pummels. Meanwhile things will settle down into a doomy passage that just forces you to nod your head. Being only 5 years old at the release of this album, I can happily say it deserves all the recognition and praise. This alongside Death’s, Scream Bloody Gore are the real forerunners for the definitive representatives of the genre.

The definitive collection of essential death metal albums 100>90

The title sounds authoritative, but I am by no means a music expert, I just have listened to death metal music religiously for over a decade, and have definitely grown my ears to hear what I think to be monumental releases in the genre. I also wanted to post this, because I always have this inclination to write a review about a release that has already been covered a million times over by those who are a lot better suited to the task. With all of that in mind, here is my inexperienced, but definitive collection of essential death metal releases.

note: though list in numerical order, the numbers do not indicate a hierarchy or from worse to greatest, vice versa. It is signify’s nothing more, than just being a numerical list.

100. Arcturus – “Sideshow Symphonies”, 2005
The notorious and apparent cult band Arcturus meant absolutely nothing to me, if you were to ask my opinion of their earliest releases, but by chance I was exposed to their newer material featuring the vocals of ICX Vortex. This is avant-garde at its finest, very experimental and a space voyage imagination. Some songs are a little ridiculous and come off as annoying more so than enjoyable, but its all easily forgettable. Nothing really death metal about this release, but I am choosing only the essential and significant pieces

099. Dismember – “Indecent and Obscene”, 1993
There is a whole slew of bands who have garnered the “gothenburg” sound, most notably coined by Entombed. If you were initiated by this sound from Bloodbath, just a quick listen to Dismember will familiarize yourself on those muffled and buzz saw riffs. To me the band who perfected this sound, and has the strongest attraction is Dismember, the most pinnacle of their discography being Indecent and Obscene.

098. Suffocation – “Pierced from Within”, 1995
Maligned with some kind of hate machine, comes New

York’s Suffocation, a household death metal name alongside Cannibal Corpse, back in the  inception of this genre. Arguably their best full length album. To me their music reached its peak with the release of Catatonia, and haven’t been able to capture the sound or hatred this album delivers. Frank Mullen is the hands down epitome of what a death metal vocalist should sound like, guttural, all the while well enunciated and easy to decipher. If you haven’t heard this album, you are definitely not a death metal fan.

097. Absymal Dawn – “Programmed to Consume”, 2008
A current generation death metal band that comes off with something refreshing and new to the table is a hard commodity these days. So when you hear something like Abysmal Dawn you quickly take notice. It was hard for me to pinpoint their best release, but if narrowed down, Programmed to Consume, takes the cake. Inspired and technical prowess, keeps it interesting.

096. Bloodbath – “Resurrection through Carnage”, 2002
Back when shopping in a record store wasn’t an entirely foreign concept, I would make some shot in the dark purchases. Usually queuing in on label, and any identifiable band members. In the case of Bloodbath, I knew nothing of them, I had no idea that Akerfeldt from Opeth was any part of this project. It was a blind purchase, that opened me up to a whole world of new death metal. Them coining their sound from bands like Carnage, Entombed and as mentioned earlier Dismember. Popularly described as buzz saw guitars in tone. This release in particular marks an incredible leap in the genre, by creating some of the most addicting melodies. To me they took a token genre and just juiced it up. Disappointingly none of their future work could outdo Resurrection through Carnage, the Fathomless Mastery coming the closest still fell short.

095. Cannibal Corpse – “Tomb of the Mutilated”, 1992
Difficult to pinpoint the pinnacle of their discography, Cannibal Corpse is a warhorse in regards to their music of the 90’s. After the polishing of their sound in the 2000’s, they left behind a primitive sound and graduated in the musical elites of the genre. Definitely a wise decision ditching Barnes in favor of Fisher, but it’s undeniable some of their best music was with Barnes at the helm. It’s actually funny I am including Tomb of the Mutilated on this list, considering this was one of my least favorite albums of their discography growing up, but now it definitely is considered the best in my opinion. Harsh angry and definitive of the genre.

094. Carcass – “Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious”, 1991
Carcass should be called the polar opposite, because that is the best way to describe their music of the past, and their music of the present. What I believe to be the happy medium? Necroticism Descanting The Insalubrious, a mouthful for sure. I consider their earliest work just a gimmick and hardly credible enough to be considered anything enjoyable to sit down and listen to. And their newer material is just too polished, and borderline commercial, that it just isn’t enjoyable. For more of my thoughts on this release CLICK HERE.

093. Cynic – “Focus”, 1993
Experimentation and progressiveness to a genre of metal that relied heavily, on well HEAVY, it would almost seem like a sure fire way to fail. But Cynic ambitiously boldly ventured a soundscape that was very pioneering and ahead of its time, still unparalleled by any current generation band. They definitely laid the foundation for experimental metal bands. Cynic alongside Atheist would fuse together elements of Jazz and other symphonic instrumentation that would surprisingly mesh together rather well. Yes an acquired sound, but once given the chance, you will find one of the most rewarding experiences in music. If the term “sci-fi” had a soundtrack, I am sure it would heavily borrow from Cynic’s music.

092. Deeds of Flesh – “Inbreeding the Anthropophagi”, 1998
It’s hard to decide what Deeds of Flesh album to put on the list, because to me their new material is fucking phenomenal! that being said, I am going to go with the safe route and pick one of their tried and true albums. I want their newer work to get some wear and tear on the tires, before putting it on the list. Even narrowing it down to their earlier work is difficult, they never really put out a “bad” album, but their earlier work doesn’t hold much variety, its like a continuous flow of the same sound. So what album to me, best signifies their sound? Inbreeding The Anthropophagi! A chaotic and unrelenting death metal masterpiece. A good use of samples to signify the subject matter. This is old school death metal at its finest.

091. Immolation – “Close to a World Below”, 2000
Immolation alongside bands like Gorguts, really became staples of the genre. Their sound is unique, they do not go the cookie cutter route. In fact the first releases were well beyond their time, but Close to a World Below came out as their greatest effort, just in time to awaken a stagnant genre. Dark, bombastic drumming and odd time signatures, add some strong lead and solo work, and you have one of the greatest death metal albums of all time. It’s also worth mention the lyrical content, and the rare ability of the vocalists to enunciate and make the vocals very distinguishable in the mix.

090. Hour of Penance – “Sedition”, 2012
A developmental masterpiece, something of groundbreaking in comparison to their other releases. The drumming is inhuman, the solo and lead work is very memorable. It just moves along like a stealth jet. Each track stands on its own, all the while having a fluid transition. For a newer death metal band, I took notice of them quickly. Unfortunately the future work is really disappointing.

Hope you all enjoyed, next post will be going through 90 > 80

Ebola Syndrom movie review (full of spoilers)

(insert now cliche, but obligatory reference to
Ebola in the states) Meet Kai, a otherwise ordinary man who likes the finer things in life, particularly raping dead African woman, making love to a chicken breast, oh and using collapsible objects as weapons. We meet Kai right in the beginning of the movie, having sex with his bosses wife, naturally the boss returns home and all hell breaks loose. Kai almost gets castrated, but he escapes unscathed leaving a bloodbath and one severed tongue behind him (penis intact*). There is also one minor but significant detail that needs to remain fresh in your minds, and that is the daughter in the apartment, that remains alive. This beginning scene also gets you accustomed to some of the classic and funny dialogue that comes out of Kai’s mouth.

Lets fast forward 10 years to Johannesburg, South Africa, where Kai gets a job as a lowly restaurant employee. Poor Kai just cant catch a break his bosses girlfriend is constantly picking on him, for no apparent reason. Before American Pie, Kai was making love to poultry, and not even thinking twice before serving his semen fused chicken breast to customers, this kind of ill behavior can be seen throughout the entire movie.
Kai and his boss get the brilliant idea to save some money on pork, by going out to a tribe of Zulu natives who unbeknownst them are dying from the Ebola virus. The sight of dying villagers and strange voodoo rituals does not scare them one bit from saving a little extra money on pork. The buy their meat and our on their way, but not before brilliantly running into a tree (very softly mind you), and the truck just dies. While the boss man is fixing the truck, Kai is found raping a dead african women, (he never loses his class) where he contracts the ebola virus. This where all the real mayhem begins.
After contracting the virus, we learn Kai is 1/10 of the individuals who can supposedly contract the deadly virus and be a carrier of it, but not be fatally effected by it. Once his boss learns of the potentially fatal condition of his employee, his only concern is keeping him around because of his hard work and cheap pay required. All the while his girlfriend is plotting to get rid of Kai (she really hates the guy). This then leads to the murder and cannibalizing of them, then leading to a complete and total outbreak of the Ebola virus. Kai robs them and jumps ship to Hong Kong, where he continues his sexual deviance and murderous rampage.
Something I forgot to mention earlier is that the girl who witnessed Kai murdering her mother and father, was later found at the restaurant of Kai in Johannesburg, and she has the weird premonitions of him, because of his scent. This drives her back to Hong Kong to try and put a stop to him.

There is so much disgustingly wrong with this movie, that you would think its grotesque appearance would be a great deterrent to most, from watching. The thing about this movie is that the humor is so strongly evident, that you cant ever take the film too seriously, and I think that fact, intertwined with the sadistic and taboo acts in the movie, make it entertaining enough. It also has some really good musical scores throughout the film. Anthony Wong’s performance is always worth the admission price, I liked him also in Bun man. He just puts on an outrageous and funny performance, which is wrong on many levels considering the nature of the movie.

when prioritized beliefs often contradict

It wasn’t made apparent to me my often pessimistic and cynical characteristics until my mid to late 20’s. I never made it a priority to become this way, it wasn’t like I spent a lot of effort in my days, plotting and scheming how I can become the half empty cup of the group. It just kind of happened this way by what I think is accident. I do believe optimism and hopeful individuals all have a characteristic of some kind of faith system. It is imperative to believe in something that gives your life order, something that you’re accountable to. So your work and efforts do not go unnoticed, and you make wise choices and decisions. Obviously this ability can also be used for pessimistic individuals, but I think in the broader scale; their pessimism is strewn with nihilism, whether objective, existential or whatever other by-product. In that case, to truly believe in something, would be contradictory to their own worldview.

Disillusionment is the main active ingredient to religion, it keeps all thoughts at bay, in the faith that there is something out there that is looking out for their best interest. I have had this frame of thinking for a large majority of my life, and it was through this disillusionment that I would put precedence in my beliefs and not into responsibility. What eventually happened, is that I became a domesticated animal, without any ability to survive in real life situations. I was like a lion taken care of for its youth into early adult hood, and forced back out into the jungle. This is where I learned not only the abandonment of what I felt like was god, but also the predatory habits of humans, which I think are not at all coincidental with the rest of the animal kingdom. This whole process changed my worldview greatly, it diminished my great amount of faith in life, in god and in my fellow man. Initially this was the most scary time in my life, because for once I honestly questioned the existence of god, of a god. I tried to persuade myself out of it, would look at good days as a sign, and bad days as recognition to my disobedience to sky gods. This went on for several years, several suicide attempts, and still at my heart of hearts I feel the disillusionment, the “you’re kidding yourself”, mentality. Ask any brimstone bible beating preacher, and they will tell you that is Satan. That is the dark lord of this world, wishing to pull me down into the clutches of hell and ass rape me with a torch for eternity. With my luck, they could very well be right.

But this whole cosmological ATM machine belief system is all very contradictory to me. So I chalk up my bad luck for being disobedient, and then I chalk up the good in my life, for being obedient and living humbly before the lord. This whole idea, this whole theology is very selfish. We human beings have no capacity to do good without the constructs of some sort of  hell/heaven, good/bad judgment. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and seems to be more valuable for delusion sake.

chaos resembling a clearer picture

How can something abstract be conceptualized? the architecture of chaos is indistinguishable, there is no blueprint, no planned idea, just chaos resembling a clearer picture. If I took any enjoyment in the arts, it would be in the capability to create something from nothing. With having no blueprint, no clear idea, just a stroke of inspiration, and the canvas of choice to bring to life the ideas in our minds. Do I draw skyscrapers? or do I let my soul spill out onto paper. That is the difference to me from traditional art, to abstract art. Now don’t get me wrong, there is a fine line to abstract from just a colorful barf thrown together to make up some kind of indistinguishable sludge. The line is crossed onto music, movies and any other “art”.

Maybe we can learn more about our existence from the abstract.

Interview with Dead Congregation

Much of today’s metal bands are a dying stagnant breed. We do still have a handful of new and old faces, that offer a refreshing change to the bunch. But it is rarely happening by new and upcoming faces. Which brings me to the music of Dead Congregation, a death metal band from Greece, that plays a charismatic mixture of death metal. I was privileged to have the chance to talk with them about several interesting topics. I hope you all enjoy.

Let me first off with saying how much of an honor and privilege to finally get into a dialogue with the band. Your music takes a chaotic blend of the earliest roots of death metal, and have delivered a new refreshing sound, to the stagnant death metal flock that has been a forbearance, in regards to the new flock of “death metal bands is a lot of cases a decline of the roots, of what makes death metal such a pivotal piece to a stagnant genre. What lead you to go with against the grain, and produce something that is so overtly driven to technicality in favor of a slew of releases that hold no boundaries in terms of the new death metal bands. A chaotic blend with rhythmic overtures which lead to an agonizing ministry of sound.

Thank you very much for the kind words. We never tried to go against the grain, we always write and play the music that feels natural to us, the band is a medium to channel our creativity and serves as a cathartic vessel with which we outflow our spiritual and artistic restlessness. There is not much thought behind our compositions, only primal instinct and emotion.
I want to slowly get away the obligatory questions and dive deeper into what makes you such a pivotal piece in the underground.

It’s not up to us to say if we’re a pivotal band in the underground so we can’t say what makes us that either. We don’t really feel like an underground band anyway, maybe a band that refuses to conform to the marketing side of things and sign to a big label but our music has passed the boundaries of the underground circles.
The geographical location Greece, has a lot of mythology surrounding your culture, and how much of that influences your impacts your music and lyrical approach.?

It doesn’t really. Although we all have huge admiration of our country’s history it doesn’t affect the way we write for Dead Congregation.
Your standard of lyrical content comes from a almost nihilistic stance as far the establishment of organized religion. How much does the church deter you away from social norms of religion?

Our lyrics are mainly about the ongoing decline of organized religion, however we prefer to write them rather abstractly so they can be loosely interpreted, as we don’t wish to preach our personal beliefs to anyone. We just want to create discomforting images/feelings to the listener by combining sardonic lyrics with the suffocating atmosphere of our music.
I want to also admit that my actual first introduction to your music was Promulgation of Fall*, which lead to me seek out your earliest releases, namely Graves of the Archangels, which still holds me in a contempt to your newest release, which is very unique in its ability to include what sounds to me like chanting monks, which surprisingly blends with the overall sound and creates an undeniable atmosphere, which works perfectly well with the sound surprisingly enough.

You mean ‘Promulgation of the Fall’ (not ‘Promulgation of Dead’). In regards to the chants in ‘Graves of the Archangels’, they were means to an end. The idea of using those chants came after we recorded all the music, then we thought about using some chants of Orthodox priests that sing hymns to the Archangels which we had and they sounded just perfect for the specific case. It was something that fit and enhanced the concept of the album.
Promulgation of the fall, has left behind the monk chanting and delivers a myriad of memorable riffs that derives the brutality and brings about a more presentable masterpiece. Slow churning riff, that assembles a opus of brutality. All the while, keep it all in context.

Indeed, it was a very conscious choice to not repeat ourselves by using similar samples but instead create all the opposing atmosphere with the sheer aggression of the riffs and compositions themselves. The new album is more direct and more diverse at the same time, there are a lot of things happening in the structures of the songs but all of feelings we want to get across are channeled through our instruments and our music’s balance between melody and disharmony.
The lyrical  content is very anti-religion. and makes me wonder how much a part of the church in Greece, that fuels your hatred for the stigmas of organized religion.?

We just feel scorn towards people who are easily manipulated and have no individual thought, such as the mindless followers of any organized religion. Since Christian religion is not only prevalent in our country but in the majority of western civilization, our lyrics are mainly targeting that.
I guess my next question, is your worldview on life and morality. Do your lyrics directly influence your lifestyle of individuals?

In general we are into individualism and personal spiritual elevation. Each one should be constantly striving for self-improvement and not conform to hypocritically moral rules instructed by any church.
To me you have made a credible sound for yourself, in the ability to bring a unpresented disregard, for the typical run of the mill death metal bands. Slow churning, while instantaneously delivering a hard driven force to meld together a perfect blend of chaos with rhythmic sections that leave a lasting impression in your mind.

Again, thanks, it’s nothing intentional. That’s just how we express ourselves through music to feel fulfilled as artists.
Now I would like to lighten up the mood a little, and ask about hobbies, and work related obligations. Its presumably with this brand of music, it must be difficult to make a reasonable living outside of your touring and being an active band.

I think the majority of our hobbies are very much music-oriented. We also read books and personally I like a lot of activities that bring me closer to nature, from snowboarding to fishing, mountain biking, even just a walk in nature. All of us enjoy trips very much so it’s a great privilege to be able to see all these foreign countries when playing with the band. Sometimes if we play in a city that is particularly interesting we’ll make sure to stay some extra days, like we did in Prague, Bergen and some others. We do have regular jobs as well so that we can afford a descent life and not live like bums.
Not to back step a little and ask, where does the monk chanting come from? is that all done and performed by the band.

No, as said, they are Orthodox hymns to the Archangels, sung by monks in a Greek monastery.
I always want to lay the nail in the coffin, because when I first heard your music, I found a slight influential from the band Incantation. But to be honest the more I listen to your music the more I hear less of Incantation, and a created sound all of your own.

Maybe our ‘sound’ and our music’s suffocating atmosphere has similarities to Incantation’s sound/atmosphere but the music and riffs and drumming themselves don’t have much in common with Incantation. We have tons of influences and the strongest are probably Slayer’s first 5 albums and Morbid Angel but as a principal we don’t try to sound like anyone in specific. We just filter all our influences and have our own interpretation of how Death Metal must sound.
What is your favorite brew of choice?

I like a lot of beers from small and big breweries but if I have to narrow it down to favorites from ‘known’ brands I’d say Kozel Dark for anytime and Corona for the hot Greek summer days when you need something very refreshing to cool you down.
Favorite past times? outside of music.

Movies, books, historical documentaries, trips, walking my dog, spending time with my girlfriend and close friends and spending time in nature.

What is the Greece metal scene like? any notable bands that you respect?

It’s quite active lately, we always had a lot of passionate metal heads in Greece and in the last 10 years we see many good bands popping up in the underground. My respect goes to Acrimonious, The Psalm, Resurgency, Embrace Of Thorns, Impure Worship, Convixion, Exarsis, many others…
I would be interested also into know what your philosophical approach to live? and what has determined your worldview?

I’m a fucking pessimistic nihilist.
The tone of your music has a inherently depressive tone, and chaotic as all hell. You hold no boundaries in your abilities to create something almost esoteric. It’s outright original in presentation. Not a single track is left without a guided direction, your writing approach is absolutely blasphemous.

Our music IS very esoteric and not calculated at all. Maybe it appears like we have tremendous

attention to detail but in reality all the layers in our songs that work together in favor for the bigger picture are just strokes of inspiration – sometimes you sit down with the guitar and an entire song takes shape without effort, ideas pop in your head one after the other and you don’t even know how you came up with all that because the composing process is not a conscious one at all. It’s not like we can sit down and say ‘ok, we’ll use this riff, then we must do a riff like this and put a lead on top like this’ and voila a song takes shape. Our music is multi-dimensional because balancing fast aggressive parts with oppressive slow parts and chaotic moments with melancholic melodies is OUR way to express ourselves, at least on this specific album. Other artists feel fulfilled with creating a 10 song album out of 9 riffs, like VON’s ‘Satanic Blood’ for example, and there is nothing wrong with that either! There is no recipe on how to write songs, you just need to be in a certain (inspirational) state which may last for a few or a lot of ideas before you fall in a writer’s block for some time. But in any case, if you’re sincere to yourself as an artist, you never force yourself to create on purpose, everything just comes naturally.

Well that is all I got. Feel free to share any final words to publicize your music accordingly. As I have said before, your music alongside Triptykon, are the reigning champions of the calendar year of 2014. Slow foreboding harmonies that leave a lasting impression. All the while unleashing a chaotic face ripping masterpiece.

Again thank you for your kind words and for having us here.
I thank you for this opportunity. And I am thoroughly impressed with your ability in musicianship.

lets talk about shit, pun intended

Persuasion is an incredible tool, to landslide the masses into agreement. I have never been one to dissuade anyone in favor of my own self interest. I have also remained on the fence while the good and bad argue over who is right, in complete contradiction they reject the middle ground. What could possibly come from chaos, but the agreement of good and evil, and the understanding to unthinkably intertwine the two opposites. That to me is human life, a bag of manure that helps soil to grow and flourish life. Yes a bag of animal shit, that I think fully illustrates the human struggle. As we wager over agreement, we forget that we are unmistakably forgetting, that in the putrid and disgusting, we digress from the fact that the positive conclusion creates life.
